Give a non-driving senior A joy-ride!

Help a senior get to an important appointment or errand such as a medical appointment.  As an all-volunteer organization, we depend on caring, adult drivers to volunteer their time and vehicle to get our seniors where they need to go so they can get the help they need and don't become isolated and stranded in their homes – to their detriment and risk.  (If you would like to volunteer your time to help in other ways than driving, there are staff volunteer activities you can assist in such as office duties and project management.)

[statement of value, quotes, appeal]

Details on how our ride service works can be found here.  Key points for driving volunteers:
  • You only accept rides that are convenient to you, using our online ride scheduler.  There is never a requirement to take any rides, nor even a minimum number.
  • You are only responsible for your time, fuel and vehicle costs for a ride.  Any out-of-pocket costs like parking are the rider's responsibility.
  • You must be an adult driver (18 years or older) and undergo an initial background check at no cost to you.
  • Your miles driven are fully tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.  We are a federally registered charity (EIN 82-5406919).
  • Younger adults still in school can earn service hours.

Whether you want to be a driving volunteer, a staff volunteer, or both, the process is the same.  First, submit an application (see below).  After we receive your application, someone from our staff will contact you, get any additional information needed, and request a background check.  Once your application is approved,  you will receive training, and be added to our Volunteer list.

To submit your application, choose any of 3 alternatives:
  1. Online application: you or a friend or family member can complete the application online by clicking on this link
  2. Paper application: download and print the application, fill it out, and send it to us by mail at SCGF, PO Box 64, Great Falls, VA  22066.  Or scan your completed application and email it to volunteers@thescgf.org.
  3. Call us:  at (703) 586-9696 and leave a message expressing your interest in becoming a volunteer.  We will return your call and take your application information over the phone.
